Learjet 60 XR Aircraft Establishes New World Speed Record

Bombardier Aerospace today confirmed that its high-performance Learjet 60 XR aircraft set a new speed record on August 8, 2010, flying 4,777 nm (8,847 km) from Wichita, Kansas to São Paulo, Brazil, with one stop in Cali, Colombia, in just 11 hours, 58 minutes. The flight was officially sanctioned by the National Aeronautics Association (N.A.A.) and the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (F.A.I.) on September 8, 2010.
Bombardier’s Learjet 60 XR business jet departed Wichita Airport (KICT) with a two-person crew and four passengers. The flight started at a long-range cruise speed of 428 KTAS (793 km/h), beginning at FL370 and ending at FL430. The aircraft made one 25-minute stop before departing for its final destination. The average speed was 443.06 mph (750 km/h) throughout the flight, with average tailwinds of five knots. The Learjet 60 XR aircraft landed, after flying normal descent and full arrival procedures, at both Cali (SKCL) and São Paulo (SBKP).
"The aircraft performed a superb takeoff from Wichita Airport at 02:00 local time and climbed directly to 37,000 ft (11,278 m) in 12 minutes,” stated Chris Walker, Captain, Bombardier Business Aircraft. The first leg to Cali (2,393 nm/4,432 km) was completed in five hours, 49 minutes, and the subsequent leg continued to São Paulo (2,384 nm/4,415 km), arriving five hours and 44 minutes later. “This record flight proves the Learjet 60 XR jet’s outstanding performance capabilities and that by flying the factory-published profiles, the aircraft will deliver consistent results,” added Kerry Swanson, Captain, Bombardier Business Aircraft.
This new N.A.A.-sanctioned world record for the Learjet 60 XR aircraft represents the fastest time ever recorded for a civil flight between Wichita and São Paulo and is the seventh speed record for the aircraft type.
• On September 21, 2006, a Learjet 60 aircraft flew Cape Town-Johannesburg non-stop in two hours and 59 minutes.
• On June 14, 2001, a Learjet 60 aircraft connected Wichita-Paris at a record speed of 505.97 mph (814km/h) in nine hours, 18 minutes and Gander-Paris at 535.48 mph (862km/h) in four hours and 42 minutes.
• On June 12, 1997, a Learjet 60 aircraft flew from Pittsburgh to Gander at a speed of 529.48 mph (852km/h) in two hours and 35 minutes, and from Pittsburgh to Paris at a speed of 486.21 mph (782km/h) in eight hours.
• On June 7, 1995, a Learjet 60 aircraft linked Wichita to Geneva and Gander to Geneva at record speeds of 478.82 mph (771km/h) in ten hours 21 minutes and 481.36 mph (775km/h) in five hours, 43 minutes, respectively.
“This new world speed record reiterates that our Learjet family of aircraft offers unparalleled performance,” said Fabio Rebello, Regional Vice President, Latin America, Bombardier Business Aircraft. “Learjet aircraft continue to gain popularity in Brazil and currently account for over 80 per cent of the Bombardier business jet fleet in the country. The Learjet 60 XR aircraft offers the perfect combination of cabin comfort, speed and efficiency and is an ideal jet for travel in this region.”
In service since July 2007, the Learjet 60 XR aircraft is a proven model of performance, comfort, value and versatility in the midsize jet market segment. It delivers a high cruise speed of Mach 0.81 (861 km/h), superior climb capabilities, proven fuel efficiency and low direct operating costs per nautical mile*. The jet’s higher operating altitudes – certified to 51,000 ft (15,545 m) – translate to time savings due to better winds, less traffic and less turbulence. The Learjet 60 XR aircraft can fly São Paulo-Lima non-stop with four passengers and two crew*. It is now available with the Signature Series interiors, which combine bold design elements with increased functionality to bring the large cabin concept to a midsize jet.

GULFSTREAM G650 ACHIEVES HIGH-SPEED CRUISE PROJECTIONS ON TEST AIRCRAFT’S FIFTH FLIGHT

Aircraft Travels 5,000 Nautical Miles Nonstop At Mach 0.90

Just prior to the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Meeting and Convention in Atlanta, Gulfstream test pilots and engineers made a compelling demonstration of the Gulfstream G650’s exceptional high-speed cruise capabilities, flying a 5,000-nautical-mile (9,260 km) closed circuit at Mach 0.90 over the Atlantic Ocean in 9 hours and 45 minutes.
“Never has a business jet flown so far, so fast, so flawlessly,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “This airplane defines a new level of productivity. Part of that is the ability to move executives in comfort swiftly around the world.”
Aircraft Serial Number (S/N) 6004, the fourth test aircraft in the flight-test program, and the first with a full interior, departed Savannah at 9:57 a.m. local time on Oct. 9 for the fastest ultra-long-range flight ever flown by a business jet. The aircraft had flown a total of only 12 hours previously, including seven hours with a fully installed interior. The jet is on display for order holders at the NBAA industry conference in Atlanta this week.
Weight at take-off was 99,538 pounds (45,150 kg). The aircraft has a maximum take-off weight of 99,600 pounds (45,178 kg), allowing it to operate from weight-restricted airports such as Teterboro and Aspen.
A crew of six manned the aircraft: Senior Experimental Test Pilot Tom Horne; Production Test Pilots Al Moros and Rick Gowthrop; Flight Test Engineer Michael Brinley; and Interior Specialists Allen Blaylock and Mike Phipps. Blaylock and Phipps used the time aloft to examine the new cabin installation under cold-soak conditions, evaluating the many new features of the G650 cabin, including communications and entertainment equipment and the airplane’s advanced Gulfstream Cabin Management System (GCMS).
Although six were aboard, the aircraft was ballasted to simulate a crew of four and eight passengers.
Climb out was at 250 knots to 10,000 feet (3,048 m), then 300 knots, transitioning to Mach 0.85 until reaching cruise altitude. Twenty-three minutes after brake release, the aircraft leveled off at its initial cruise altitude of 39,000 feet (11,887 m) and accelerated to Mach 0.90, later making step climbs to a final cruise altitude of 45,000 feet (13,716 m).
Due to the aircraft’s experimental status and its current lack of reduced vertical separation minimum (RVSM) approval, there were some restrictions to the route that could be selected for a high-speed demonstration. Therefore, the aircraft flew in an offshore warning area in a 200- nautical-mile race-track pattern with 70-mile (113 km) turns flown at an approximate bank angle of 12 degrees. Temperature along the route was close to ISA with the worst case being ISA+7.
Descent was at Mach 0.90, transitioning to 300 knots and then 250 knots at 10,000 feet (3,048 m) with a return landing with NBAA IFR reserves in Savannah.
“At those speeds, we could have been in Buenos Aires for dinner, or in Hawaii for lunch due to the time zone change” said Horne. “We continue to be impressed by the reliability and capability of this airplane at this early stage in its development.”
The G650 has a range of 7,000 nm (12,964 km) at Mach 0.85. It is the largest, fastest, longest-range purpose-built business jet. Certification is planned for 2011 with customer deliveries beginning in 2012.

Cessna Delivers First European Citation CJ4

Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, is celebrating the first European delivery of a Citation CJ4.
The aircraft has this month been delivered to a private owner/operator in the U.K.
European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification for the CJ4 is now pending and Cessna plans to make the first European-registered delivery of the aircraft type, into Germany, in the second quarter of 2011. U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for the CJ4 was granted in March 2010, with the first customer delivery taking place in April.
The CJ4 is the newest and largest member of the popular CJ family of business jets, which includes the Citation CJ1+, CJ2+ and CJ3. The CJ4 is FAA-approved for single-pilot operations and shares a common pilot type rating with the other CJs. (A pilot rated to fly any one of the CJs is therefore rated to fly them all.) Retail price for a typically-equipped CJ4 is $9 million.
The CJ4 has a range of just over 2,000 nautical miles (3,710 kilometers) and a top speed of 453 knots per hour (839 kilometers). The aircraft has a takeoff roll of 3,130 feet (954 meters) at maximum takeoff weight.
The CJ4 features a four-screen Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics suite and debuts the Rockwell Collins Venue cabin management system. Standard features on the aircraft include multi-scan weather radar and a maintenance diagnostic system.

A Grand Caravan with a special 25th anniversary paint scheme is on static display at the Cessna exhibit at Dekalb Peachtree Airport (KPDK) during the event.
“The Caravan has been a tremendous success for Cessna. Its order book has remained resilient for 25 years including during this most recent economic downturn,” said Roger Whyte, Cessna’s senior vice president of Sales and Marketing.
The Caravan is known around the world for its versatility. Whether providing airline service, transporting cargo or outfitted in the OASIS™ interior for business travel, it fits multiple and unique missions making it a main-stay in the industry.
“The Caravan has also provided much needed humanitarian relief efforts throughout the world, including Indonesia, Africa and most recently Haiti. The Caravan’s capability to bring supplies to stricken regions via unimproved or makeshift runways has made it the perfect aircraft for this type of mission,” Whyte said.
Cessna delivered its 2,000th Caravan, a Grand Caravan, in September, this one going to Air St. Kitts-Nevis to be used as part of the carrier’s DHL courier operation. The carrier, which operates out of multiple bases in the Caribbean, will also take delivery of another new Caravan this year. The sale was made through Tropical Aviation Distributors, Cessna’s authorized sales representative for the Caribbean.
The single-engine turboprop Caravan is certified in 100 countries and the fleet has amassed more than 13 million flight hours. It received FAA type certification in 1984 and marked its first customer delivery in 1985.
